General FAQs

Your trainer is available to provide support and answer any questions you may have as you progress through your qualification. You can directly message your trainer through the Learner Portal or via email or phone.

If you require further help, please email admin@smit.edu.au or call our office at 08 8984 4522.

You are permitted 3 attempts to successfully complete each assessment item. If you do not pass after 3 attempts, you will be given a Gap Question as your final attempt. You will need to research this question and submit your answer to the trainer for marking.

The timeframe for course completion varies by program, and specific details can be found in the course information pack. Extensions may be granted for legitimate reasons such as medical issues or prolonged absences.

  • Fee for Service students must complete their qualification within 12 months from enrolment.
  • Funded Students must complete by 15th December 2025, regardless of the enrolment date. For instance, if Bob enrols in February, he has 10 months to complete, whereas Fred enrolling in August has only 4 months.

Please contact our team to discuss.

We provide various support options, including telephone assistance, face-to-face meetings, team meetings, and email communication. The specific resources available will depend on the course you are enrolled in but rest assured that expert assistance will always be accessible.

Most courses require additional work beyond the online learning materials or workshops. This may include research, practical tasks, or responding to knowledge questions. Your course outline will detail the workload involved.

In competency-based training and assessment, training is flexible. You have the opportunity to complete most courses at your own pace; therefore, your effort and dedication will determine how quickly you finish.

If your trainer is engaged in delivering sessions elsewhere, marking responsibilities may be reallocated to other qualified trainers or assessors. Additionally, different assessors are often assigned for moderation and to contribute to our continuous quality improvement efforts.

We aim to complete marking for all assessments within ten working days. While we usually accomplish this more quickly, there can be slight delays during peak periods.

To request an extension, please contact your trainer via email before the due date. We expect that you will either modify your schedule or return to your original training plan deadlines. If you have exceeded the permitted course duration or are withdrawn and then re-enrolled, a fee of $500 extension or re-enrolment will apply.

Once you have finished all assessments in your course successfully, we will review your file and begin the certificate issuance process. This can take up to 30 days; however, we strive to complete it sooner. Delays may occur if you haven’t settled your invoice, provided a valid USI, or completed the survey sent after validating your file.

A fee of $100 will be charged for reissuing any certificates that are lost or sent to an outdated address due to students not updating their information.

Please notify Administration of any changes to your account details or change of circumstances. Email: admin@smit.edu.au

Payments 2, 3, and 4 must be made fortnightly, or earlier.

If you do not make the agreed fortnightly payments under the payment schedule, you will be suspended from accessing the learning and assessment portal until all arrears are paid. If no payment or assessment activity in the portal occurs for 2 months, you will be automatically withdrawn without notice.

No, our Student Finance Officer will not send reminders about outstanding payments. It is your responsibility to contact the office or Student Finance Officer to be reinstated. For assistance, email: thomas@smit.edu.au.

RPL

RPL stands for Recognition of Prior Learning. This process allows you to receive credit for knowledge, skills, and experiences gained through life by recognising them towards a full qualification or specific units of competency.

The evidence needed will differ depending on each unit of competency you apply for. Generally, you should provide documents such as your resume, job descriptions, references, etc., as initial evidence. We offer a comprehensive list of suggested RPL evidence upon enrolment.

If your RPL application is denied, you have the option to enrol in units available through delivery and assessment pathways to complete them with us or another provider.
