Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 Near Coastal
Marine engineers are responsible for operating, maintaining and repairing engines, machinery and other mechanical and electronic equipment aboard ships and offshore structures. They operate and maintain a ship’s engine according to orders from the ship’s captain.
A Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 license offers good career prospects and opportunities for advancement within the maritime industry.
This includes chief engineer, second engineer, marine technician, maritime operations and some may choose to start their own business.
MAR40224 Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 Near Coastal)
This qualification is required to:
- chief engineer on a vessel with an inboard engine with propulsion power <1500 kW <EEZ
- second engineer on a vessel with an inboard engine with propulsion power <3000 kW <EEZ
- chief engineer on a vessel with an outboard engine with unlimited propulsion power <EEZ
- assist an engineer in any tasks that may be required on board while working under the general supervision of the person in charge of the vessel’s engines <EEZ
- work in the engine room of a vessel with an inboard engine with propulsion power <3000 kW <EEZ

Licensing and Regulations
To obtain an AMSA certification as a Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 Near Coastal as defined in Marine Order 505.
AMSA certification of competency will require achievement of:
- MAR40224 Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 Near Coastal)
- Meeting the medical and eyesight requirements specified in Marine Order 505
- Pass a final assessment
- Sea Service – you must have completed either:
- With an AMSA Task Book – can be purchased from SMIT.
- 120 days on commercial vessels with inboard diesel engines at least 375 kilowatts
- 90 days on commercial vessels with inboard diesel engines at least 375 kilowatts while holding a workshop skills equivalent qualification
- Or without AMSA Task Book
- 240 days on commercial vessels with inboard diesel engines at least 375 kilowatts
- 180 days on commercial vessels with inboard diesel engines at least 375 kilowatts while holding a workshop skills equivalent qualification
- With an AMSA Task Book – can be purchased from SMIT.
